Young Church

Children and young people are full members of our church — valued and welcome in all parts of the church’s life.

Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’ (Matthew 19.14)

Young Church at St Mary’s exists to encourage and nurture children, young people and their families in the Christian faith. All are welcome and we aim to offer a secure, stimulating and friendly environment in which to worship, to explore our faith and grow together as Christians.

What happens on Sunday mornings

Young Church meets every Sunday throughout the school year except for those Sundays and Festival Days when the whole church comes together to worship. We gather together in the church hall at 10:30am and then divide into smaller groups for 3 – 7 year olds, 8 – 11 year olds and ages 12+ each with a leader, to listen to the Bible story of the week. They then have an opportunity to respond to what they have heard – to share ideas and experiences, to express themselves through arts and crafts, drama or music and to interact and play together.

At around 11:20am Young Church members join the rest of the congregation in the church for Communion or a blessing and the children remain in the church for the final part of the service.

Refreshments are available in the hall immediately after the service with an opportunity for parents and children to get to know others in the church.

Parents with babies and tots

A crèche can be organised but parents with babies and pre-schoolers are also welcome to stay at Young Church with their children if this seems right for the family.

Children are also welcome in church services at any time. There is a family area at the back of the church with quiet activities for young children.
