Young Church

youngchurch_logoidea1Young people are full members of our church — valued and welcome in all parts of the church’s life.

Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’ (Matthew 19.14)

Young Church @ St Mary’s exists to encourage and nurture children, young people and families in the Christian faith. All are welcome and we aim to offer a secure, stimulating and friendly environment in which to worship, to explore our faith and grow together as Christians.

What happens on Sunday mornings

Young Church meets every Sunday throughout the school year. On arrival in the church hall at 10.30am, the children are greeted and new families are welcomed. We start with a gathering activity and a prayer before listening together to the Bible story of the week. We then have an opportunity to respond to what we have heard – to share ideas and experiences, to express ourselves through arts and crafts, drama or music and to interact and play together.

Young Church then joins the rest of the congregation in the church for Communion or a Blessing and remains in the church for the final part of the service. Communion is open to people of all ages, and there is ongoing teaching and nurture to help us engage more deeply with the sacramental life of the church.

Refreshments are available immediately after the service with an opportunity for parents and children to get to know others in the church.

Parents with babies and tots

A crèche can be organised but parents with babies and pre-schoolers are also welcome to stay at Young Church with their children if this seems right for the family. Children are also welcome in church at any time.

All-age services

Roughly once a month and for festivals the whole church comes together to worship. Children and young people are encouraged to take part by joining a singing group, playing instruments reading or praying.
